Bláha: I want to teach the faculty to support success
Text/Photo: Emma Marušáková
The Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science has elected ecotoxicologist and current Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies Luděk Bláha as its candidate for Dean. He took up the position, to which he was appointed by the Rector of Masaryk University, on February 1.

The election of the new dean of the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University took place on October 20, 2025. Senators chose from three candidates who wanted to take over from Tomáš Kašparovský, whose second term was coming to an end. In a two-round election, Luděk Bláha ultimately won the necessary majority of votes.
You first ran for dean eight years ago against Tomáš Kašparovský. You eventually became part of the faculty's leadership. What do you bring to the role of dean from this period? With a little exaggeration, I would say that I gained a little humility and understood that it will never be "Bláha's world." But seriously, I understood that the university is a really large institution that, while it does not function like a corporation, must adhere to many rules. I found that academic self-government does not speed up many processes, because things have to be thoroughly discussed, but at the same time it provides important feedback to senior staff and acts as a kind of brake and reminder that the university is not just about their personal ideas and decisions. To sum up, I have learned that it is better to resolve everything by consensus and that it is more beneficial to gradually convince people of what I consider important than to simply present specific solutions without a thorough explanation.
In the debates prior to your election, it was said that the faculty lacks a comprehensive strategy. How do you perceive this and what strategy do you want to set? The Faculty of Science has a very diversified structure – we have departments that are larger than some entire faculties, and others that have only a few dozen employees. It is simply unrealistic to tell large departments what to do, and I respect the independence of our departments' management. Nevertheless, we all need to move in the same direction within the faculty. The faculty's strategy must be based on agreement on where we want to go in the long term. For me, this means above all ensuring that we have strong and respected leaders in the five core areas in which we teach and conduct research. I also want us to clearly and dispassionately acknowledge that some parts of the faculty are naturally more focused on teaching and others more on cutting-edge scientific performance, and to agree that each of these positions is key to the functioning of the faculty and is not superior to the other.

Also Good To Know:
With the start of February, our faculty has entered a new chapter. Alongside the appointment of a new Dean, changes have also taken place in the faculty leadership responsible for doctoral studies and research. Doc. Jan Paleček has been appointed Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies, while doc. Jiří Kohoutek now serves as Vice-Dean for Research. We wish both of them every success in their new roles in doctoral studies and research at our faculty.
