The award is a response to the team's historic success at the iGEM Grand Jamboree world finals in Paris, where iGEM Brno won the grand prize in the Overgraduate category. With this step, the faculty highlighted not only the project's high professional level, but also the team's long-term systematic work, interdisciplinary cooperation, and professional performance on the international stage.
"The success of the iGEM Brno team is proof that our students can compete with the best universities in the world. Through their work, dedication, and presentation of results, they have significantly contributed to the good reputation of the Faculty of Science and Masaryk University as a whole. At the same time, the team is proof that motivated students and their efforts should be supported, as this brings great results such as this one," said Tomáš Kašparovský, praising the entire team.
The iGEM Brno team consists of 21 students from various departments of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, the Faculty of Economics and Administration, Masaryk University, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and the Faculty of Informatics, Brno University of Technology. It is also joined by high school student Anna Podmanická. The team prevailed in competition with more than 400 teams from around the world. The jury was particularly impressed by the innovative approach to solving a real-world problem using synthetic biology, the quality of the scientific outputs, and the clear and visually sophisticated presentation of the project.
"We see the honorable mention as a significant recognition of our work. We greatly appreciate the support and recognition from the faculty. At the same time, I would like to say that without the help of the teachers and, of course, the financial resources, we would not have achieved such a great success. Thank you once again," said Matej Zámečník, founding member of iGEM Brno.
The Faculty of Science at Masaryk University has long supported student initiatives that combine cutting-edge research with practical impact. According to the faculty management, the success of iGEM Brno is an example of how student projects can contribute to the development of science, innovation, and the international reputation of the university.
