ATMO-SERV brings together all major European Atmospheric Research Infrastructures (RIs) – ACTRIS, ICOS, IAGOS, EISCAT_3D, and SIOS – complemented by the health-focused EIRENE RI, the ARISE and ASCENT networks, and international access providers in South Africa, India, Lebanon, Brazil and the USA. For the first time, this unique consortium integrates the full spectrum of atmospheric observations, from the Earth’s surface to the middle atmosphere, with human exposure research, addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change, air quality, extreme events, and health impacts. The project provides curiosity-driven transnational and virtual access to over 90 state-of-the-art facilities and 12 digital services, supported by harmonised access management via the ACTRIS Service and Access Management Unit. Users will benefit from integrated, interoperable, and FAIR services spanning simulation chambers, aircraft platforms, observation networks, laboratories, data repositories, and digital tools. We have identified four specific areas: (1) chemistry of emissions; (2) aerosol formation, multiphase processes, and aerosol–cloud–precipitation interactions; (3) atmospheric dynamics and chemistry at interfaces between atmospheric layers and ecosystems; and (4) air pollution, exposome, and human health linkages. These areas target fundamental gaps in chemical mechanisms, atmospheric layers and their coupling, and exposure pathways that underpin climate and health assessments. The project strengthens European leadership in atmospheric sciences by ensuring integration into global observing systems and by supporting calibration and validation of satellite missions such as EarthCARE. Training and outreach activities will engage new user communities, support widening countries, and empower the next generation of researchers.
By fostering open, sustainable, and globally connected access to RIs, ATMO-SERV will advance frontier knowledge and generate scientific breakthroughs.
